Understanding Binders: Which One to Use and Their Specific Affinities
Feb 04, 2025
Detoxification is a complex process, and one key component that often gets overlooked is the use of binders. Binders are substances that help trap and remove toxins from the body, preventing them from being reabsorbed in the gut. This is why we emphasise how important it is to take one alongside your detox protocols, especially when actively detoxing.
Each binder has a unique affinity for certain toxins, meaning that the effectiveness of a binder depends on what you are trying to eliminate.
In this guide, we will explore different binders, their specific affinities, and how to use them safely as part of your holistic detox protocol.
How Do Binders Work?
During detoxification, toxins are mobilised from tissues and released into circulation. The liver processes many of these toxins and excretes them into bile, which then moves into the intestines for elimination. However, without a binder, some of these toxins can be reabsorbed into the bloodstream, leading to a process called enterohepatic recirculation. This can make detox symptoms worse and slow down toxin removal.
Binders work by binding to toxins in the gut, preventing their reabsorption and allowing them to be safely excreted through the stool. Choosing the right binder is essential to effectively eliminate specific toxins.
Different Binders and Their Specific Affinities
1. Activated Charcoal
Best for: Mould toxins (mycotoxins), heavy metals, pesticides, herbicides, endotoxins
How it Works: Activated charcoal is highly porous and adsorbs a wide range of toxins. It is especially useful for binding mycotoxins from mould exposure and endotoxins from bacterial die-off (common in gut infections and parasite cleansing).
Caution: Can cause constipation if not taken with enough water. It should be taken away from medications and supplements.
2. Bentonite Clay
Best for: Heavy metals (mercury, lead, aluminium), mould toxins, mycotoxins, environmental toxins
How it Works: Bentonite clay has a negative charge, attracting positively charged toxins. It is particularly effective for binding heavy metals and environmental pollutants.
Caution: Should be taken away from medications and supplements, as it can interfere with absorption. Ensure adequate hydration to prevent constipation.
3. Zeolite
Best for: Heavy metals (lead, arsenic, cadmium), radioactive elements, ammonia
How it Works: Zeolite is a natural volcanic mineral with a honeycomb structure that traps positively charged toxins like heavy metals. It does not bind to beneficial minerals like magnesium and calcium, making it a gentler option for detox.
Caution: Quality matters—low-quality zeolite can contain contaminants. Always source from a trusted supplier.
4. Chlorella
Best for: Heavy metals (mercury, cadmium), dioxins, pesticides
How it Works: Chlorella is a green algae that binds to heavy metals and environmental toxins. Unlike other binders, chlorella also provides nutrients, including chlorophyll, which helps support liver function.
Caution: Some people may react negatively to chlorella, especially those with sulphur sensitivity. It should be introduced gradually. You also have to be careful with sourcing as Chlorella can be contaminated. The final consideration is that Chlorella can sometimes drop metals before fully getting them out of the body. Combining Chlorella with another binder can help prevent this.
5. Enterosgel (Silica-based Binder)
Best for: Endotoxins, ammonia, metabolic waste, histamines
How it Works: Enterosgel is a silica-based gel that selectively binds to metabolic waste products and inflammatory toxins, such as those from gut dysbiosis or histamine intolerance.
Caution: Does not bind well to heavy metals but is excellent for reducing inflammatory burden.
6. Diatomaceous Earth
Best for: Parasites, bacteria, heavy metals (aluminium, lead, mercury), silica replenishment
How it Works: Diatomaceous earth (DE) is composed of fossilised algae with a microporous structure that helps to physically remove parasites, bacteria, and some heavy metals from the gut. It is also rich in silica, which supports skin, hair, and connective tissue health.
Caution: DE can be very drying, so it’s essential to drink plenty of water when using it. Use food-grade DE only.
How to Use Binders Effectively
- Always take binders away from supplements (at least 1 hour before and after) and medications (at least 2 hours before or after).
- Stay hydrated, as many binders can cause constipation.
- Support liver and lymphatic drainage while using binders to ensure toxins are efficiently eliminated.
- Choose the right binder for the specific toxins you are targeting - activated charcoal is what we recommend to start with as it is gentle and a good all rounder
- Cycle binders to prevent depletion of minerals and to maintain effectiveness.
Incorporating the right binders into your detox protocol can significantly enhance your body's ability to remove toxins safely and effectively.
